Maggie (The Spiritual Puppeteer)
Kyo was walking home from school that day. He was just a regular human stuck in a youkai filled world, youkai being demons. This place was called the Youkai world, a world sealed off from Earth, and where God puts all her magical, mythical, supernatural, and any other creatures that don't belong on Earth. Kyo, however, was a special one. He prayed to God to put him in a world like this, and it was granted by him getting lost in some woods and ending up here... It mirrored Earth, but instead of people and animals, it was inhabited with youkai, of course. Satyrs, Nymphs, Demons, Demon possessed people, phantoms, half phantoms, arm pit showing shrine maidens, you name it.
Now then, let's talk about Kyo. He was 18 years old, bright red hair that was short and slightly messy. His eye color matched his hair, and he wears a black sleeveless, black and red baggy pants (with black suspenders hanging off of them), boots, and fingerless gloves. Really, the punkish look. He was mostly living a carefree life as of now, and has been in this world for 2 years, so he certainly has adapted.
Anyways, back to the story. Kyo was walking back from school to home, going through the park on his route. Since it's almost summer, he decided to stop and take a break, sitting on one of the benches, letting out a comfortable sigh. This is so much better than back on Earth. It's always cool seeing so many different things here... He thought, smiling and looking around the park. His eyes stopped on a beautiful girl, sitting cross legged and playing with a small marionette, manipulating it's strings not with a controlling device, but rather, her fingers. Yes, strings were coming out of her fingertips and into the doll. She had brown hair, combed to the side and the back was fixed into a braid ending at her shoulder blades. Her eyes were emerald green, and her skin? Fair. She was a phantom, because there were two glowing blue flames beside her. Not only that, she was wearing two sweaters to combat her low temperature as a spirit. She wore a pink skirt, and knee-high boots. She doesn't look a day over 17, but Kyo knew that she could be much more older.
Kyo smiled. She sure was beautiful, even though she was dead. He looked at her some more before getting up and sitting down next to her. Hey. How're you doing? He asked cheerfully.
She smiled and looked over. I'm doing fine, thanks. Kyo nodded, smiling.
That's good, that's good... Where'd you get that?
This? She stopped playing with the mannequin for a second. I made it myself.
Wow, it's really good.
Thanks. She laughed.
My name's Kyo, what's yours?
Maggie. She responded. And I'm not interested.
Kyo paused before laughing nervously. You can tell?
Of course? Normally people won't sit next to you and start a conversation unless they want something.
Ah.. I see.. Kyo looked away, slightly disappointed. Maggie stood up.
Well, I'm going to get going. See you later. With that, she was gone. Kyo sighed. That didn't go like I thought it would.. He frowned. Shrugging it off, he went back home.
The next day, on his route back, he spotted Maggie playing with the mannequin again. Deciding to try again, he sat next to her.. Again.
Hey Kyo. She said, not looking over.
Hey. Glad you remember my name.
Do you remember mine?
Maggie, right? She nodded.
That's right. Two points.
Huh? Two points?
Maggie nodded. It's a good thing.
Oh, okay. Kyo looked away, and there was silence for a while. So uh.. I'm guessing you really like dolls?
I don't like them, I love them. Maggie replied, not looking over again.
Do you collect them?
Yes I do. I have hundreds store bought and about 50 that I made myself.
That's cool. Kyo nodded. Yet again, there was silence. How long does it usually take for you to make one?
Depends. Sometimes it can take a few minutes, sometimes it can take a whole week.
Wow, a few minutes?
Only if I have a good base and I know what I want to do. Maggie looked over and smiled before going back to her doll.
Oh, I see.. So.. Why do you stop by here to play with your doll?
Why not? She said simply. Besides, this is a nice place to sit at. I can watch people go by all day long. Her hands went onto her lap, the miniature mannequin dangling from them. She looked up at the sky. Sure is beautiful. She let out a romantic sigh. Suddenly, she looked over at him. Well, I have to go today. I'll see you later. As she stood up, Kyo waved goodbye to her, and she was gone.
However, even though she has vanished, Kyo couldn't help but wonder if she had died here, which is why she's so attached to this place. Later that night, he stopped by a store to pick up a doll to give her tomorrow. He chose one that he thought she would like and hoped for the best.
The next day, once again, Maggie was sitting at the park. Kyo smiled as he walked over to her. Hey. I got you something. He held out the doll and Maggie smiled back.
Wow! It's cute! Thank you! She took it and hugged it, smiling. Isn't this a bit too fast? She asked jokingly. I mean, you do know how to get to my heart, and fast. Kyo smiled even wider, sitting next to her.
Heh, thanks. She smiled back.
Aw, now I have to get you something.
You don't have to.
I want to though.
Alright then. Kyo laughed. Say, do you have any friends?
Of course I do. She smiled. What, you think that just because I play with dolls makes me creepy and no one would like me? She joked, and Kyo laughed, but honestly, he really thought that. I have plenty of friends. She said seriously. They stay over all the time.
Both of them talked for hours, and when it became sunset, Maggie hurried home, thanking him once again for the gift, and for the wonderful conversation.
As the days passed, the two became closer, to the point where the moment they saw each other, they'd call out to them. Then one day, Kyo suggested going out to the cafe for a date, and Maggie accepted. There, they sat at a table for two, browsing through the menu. Not long after, a vampire came over, an awkward sight for most humans, but to Kyo, it was the norm. Vampires are so much more different than in folklore. They can walk out in the day, cross running water, drink holy water, and laugh at garlic and crosses (but they just think of garlic as very stinky due to their heightened senses, so it's no wonder why they run away at the smell of one).
Got your order ready? he asked them. He was pale, had brown hair, and golden eyes. He had a long sleeved button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up to above his elbows and slacks, and a belt that had many knives attached to it.
Um, yeah, I'd like the strawberry shake, please.
I'll have it too. Maggie added. The vampire nodded and in the next second, two cups of strawberry smoothies were in front of them. He then turned and walked to serve the next group.
Wow, that was fast. Maggie exclaimed.
Yeah. That was Karnen. He's the oldest vampire, and can manipulate time.
That's pretty cool!
Yeah, I agree.
Maggie straightened up, sipping at her drink, and then looked at Kyo right in the eyes. You know, my friends have been wondering about you. They want to meet you.
That day, Kyo had his first kiss with her. He had walked her home, after paying the bill for the drinks (otherwise, he'd get the sharp end of Karnen's knives), and she was in the process of thanking him for it. Suddenly, he grabbed her and pressed his lips against hers. Her eyes widened, but then they slowly closed and embraced the kiss. She tasted and felt no different than a human at all. After a while, he broke the kiss, and she let out a sigh, as if sad that it was over. Dazing off for a moment, she finally snapped back to reality. Oh.. Uh.. thanks... I'll see you tomorrow.
Kyo smiled back at her and nodded. Bye. Have a nice night.
Bye.. she said back, pushing open her front door. Take care. Then she slipped through and vanished. Kyo stood there, staring at the house for several minutes before jumping up into the air, letting out a loud Yahoo! and happily running back.
As more weeks passed, the relationship grew more intimate, and Kyo frequently took her out on dates, including an amusement park, to the lake, the movies.. Finally, at a restaurant, Maggie had a mischievous grin on her face.
What's up? Kyo asked, grinning as well.
Well, my friends have been interested in you, and... they wanna meet you. Can you come over to my house on Thursday? Sorry for the short term notice...
Kyo felt overwhelming joy in him. He can go INSIDE her house. Y-yes, I can!
Perfect! Maggie squealed with joy. And it was also on that day that they confessed their love for each other. As they parted, Kyo couldn't help but feel excited for Thursday, which was a mere two days away.
Thursday came, and Kyo met Maggie in front of her house.
You're here! That's great! She let out a small cheer. Kyo couldn't help but smile. Ah, she was so cute when she did that. Come on in, come on in. She pushed open the front door, and Kyo walked on through, followed by her. The house was almost pitch black.
Huh? Where's the lights?
Oh, I forgot to turn them on. There was a flipping of a switch and the lights flickered on. Though her house looked like it came from a horror movie (specifically Ju-on), it had potential for a more homely feel. Kyo was amazed. This house was much better than his apartment. He wondered if she would mind him living here if they get together. When they get together.
They're in the basement. Maggie said, leading him down there, the two blue flames floating next to her illuminated the way. Once they got to the bottom of the stairs, in front of the door, she turned around and smiled. They might be a little weird, but please, deal with them, okay?
Alright. Kyo smiled. He felt two pinches on the back of his wrist. Ouch. he was about to looked down to scratch them, but Maggie distracted him with a kiss. When she pulled away, he was a bit confused but smiled. Completely forgetting about the pinching sensation, he followed her through the door. The room was very dark and it was huge. Kyo couldn't see anything even though Maggie's soul flames lit up some of the area. As she walked deeper into the room, Kyo couldn't help but feel his wrists itching, so he scratched at it. Finally, at the very end of the long room, there was a switch, which Maggie flipped. The lights came on, and Kyo was met with a horrifying sight.
The room was filled with humans.. No, wait.. they were mannequins, life sized, but they all looked human. Posed in many different positions.. Some had a calm look on their face, others, complete horror.
Wh-what is this?!
My friends. Maggie said in her usual tone, but now it sounded creepy to Kyo.
Yes... I love each and everyone of them so much, I didn't want them to die. After all, losing someone dear to you is so painful... Don't worry, they're still alive. They can see, hear, smell, and feel us. They just can't move, that's all. She explained. Kyo turned to Maggie.
I turned them into mannequins so they can stay with me forever. She had a sad look on her face. Is that bad?
Kyo's hands started feeling numb, but that didn't matter. Instead, he turned and took off as fast as he could. Kyo, wait! He heard her scream, but he didn't care. He ran until his feet became numb, causing him to trip and hit his head against the floor. That's when he noticed why his hands were numb. They had changed into wood, like a mannequin's hands. Little spheres where the joints in his fingers were, and round, cylinder like pieces for everything else.
No! Nooo! He screamed. He pushed himself up, but when he tried to run again, his feet flopped around uselessly, having become wooden as well. So instead, he tried to crawl his way out, but his fingers won't react to his command... Suddenly, he was lifted into the air by his wrist. Wha?! He noticed wires attached to them, and the wires were connected to... Maggie's spirit flames?!
Please.. Stay with me... Maggie hugged Kyo from behind.
No! You're crazy! Turn me back! Kyo screamed frantically. Maggie felt hurt.
But I want you to be with me.. Together.. Forever..
Maggie, if you really love me, please let me go. Kyo said in between breaths of panic.
But I do love you. I love you so much I don't want to see you die. You are my first boyfriend, too.
But, if I become a doll, how will I give you presents, and take you out on dates?!
Simple, I'll control your actions. The numbness was spreading down his arms and up his legs. Kyo looked at them in horror as he saw the flesh change into wood. Maggie kissed him, and his lips against his will. Please tell me you love me. She whispered in his ear.
N-no! Let me go!
Please.. This is your last chance. The numbness went past his shoulders and waist. He could no longer move his arms and legs.
Maggie, let me go, please. Kyo couldn't think of anything to offer as a plea bargin.
Just tell me you love me.
I-I love you Maggie! Let me go!
Thank you... Maggie pushed his lips closed and pulled it to a gentle smile, fitting his eyes to match his lips using string from her finger tips. His whole torso had went numb and became wooden, and it spread up his neck, then past his mouth so he could no longer speak, and then up and over his head. It was complete. He could no longer move, or speak. He no longer had a will of his own. His face kept in his calm, and cool smiling expression, but he now had pupiless eyes. His red hair was still present, in it's natural softness. Maggie hugged the doll, smelling his hair. I love you.. she repeated over and over again, hugging his limp and light body. He was now with her, forever, to do as she command, and all the while, he knew exactly what kind of a state he was in, and doomed to be like this forever...
